Judo has a structured system of grading for each student.
Judo belt grade colorsAs shown above the requirements to progress through the judo ranks are both varied and fully encompasses martial arts techniques to give a high level of skills at each of the various grades.
To reach the level of dan grade [black belt] it is normally expected that a student must  ’experience’ each grade for a progressively longer time throughout their journey from beginner to black belt, understanding the skills and principles of judo as it was originally taught many years ago.
The expected skill and knowledge level for a beginner student to progress from white belt to yellow belt would normally be six months and consist of a few basic throws, holds and movements around the tatami [mat] along with some Japanese translations of common Judo words, however, as the student trains more, learns more and becomes more proficient at Judo the requirements to show higher ability and knowledge increase dramatically to the point where a student would be expected to take a minimum of two years and more to move from brown belt to a fully fledged black belt as the syllabus requires very high standards to be achieved.
